New Roof Over Our Heads

Have you ever started a project, then halfway through, you wonder "What the heck was I thinking?" This re-shingling project was that one for me. When I bought the shingles, the salesperson was telling me something about 40 years. I though he was talking about the guarantee, but I think he meant how long it takes one person to complete the job. Starting the week after the Bay Day Race (see Controversy at The Great Race XXX 2009 below, and vote), excluding a week in Florida, there are a few cosmetic things to complete, and it's September 3rd . First you'll see pictures as I progress through the task, then I'll have some before and after pics. Warning, there a good number of pics.

Just getting started

Paul, one of three immigrants hired in from a small town of Vermont to help out.

One part done, there to go.

Notice the rain diverted over the front door? I think it turned out pretty good, and it works.

Back of the garage

Removing the old roofing

Story behind this photo. Shawn and I drove to Lowes to get another tarp due to a coming storm. We purchased a 20 x 30 and ended up opening it and laying it down just as it began to pour. You can see the new tarp, it's in the back ground, but what you can't see is the 19 ft that is hanging over the side of the house, down to the first floor. Thinking back, we should have bought the 30 x 20 instead, that would have fit over the roof better.

Rolling out the new roof.

Now the sun room.

Looks good.

What a mess, where's the clean up crew?

I don't have a picture of Dad, but he supervised the project and picked some beans.

What you don't see in the pictures is that the first half of the project I had to work around the rain. The second part was a challenge due to the heat.

Now, for the before and after pics.

So, If you'd like a new roof, contact anyone but me. Thanks to Paul, Shawn, and Dad, it's done

Looks good...just in time for all that heavy snow/ice you guys tend to get up north.

That undocumented worker Paul was overheard saying that the job was simplified buy the prep work done on the new porch. "The previous builder did an incredible job but why didn't he come back to do the roof".

Whew! You must be tired of doing all the tedious roof works. On a positive note, you have acquired a new skill. However, it must be tiring for you, Paul, Shawn, and your Dad. Next time, it would be better to hire a roofing company. It’ll give you less hassle and less worries, I'm telling you. :)

It’ll surely be better to hire a roofing company next time for their convenience. Though nothing beats the fun of getting together and working hard on something, and the rewards are just that sweeter. Great looking house! Been three years now since you guys built it, hope you stick to your annual maintenance and repairs! ; )

I wonder how your house looks now. Since you guys have experienced how hard it is to replace roof, not to mention the amount of money it had cost you, I’m pretty sure you’re going the extra mile now in cleaning and maintaining your roof so it would last. :)
